1997–2000
These images represent my first attempts at photography. I was living in Olympia, Washington, (though many of these photographs aren’t limited to that locale) and had purchased a Nikon FM2n manual SLR. These were taken with a Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 macro lens which really challenged me to stop and look at the smaller things I normally overlooked. The manual aspect of the camera made me pause and think about what I was doing. I was forced to focus on composition, which really helped me develop an eye for layout. These were all shot using transparency film.
2001–2003
After Olympia, Washington, I moved to Columbus, Ohio. I was still using the FM2n, but began to explore other lenses, including the wide-angle. Initially, I concentrated on composition. This section reflects my shift toward recognizing the importance of subject.
2004–2006
In 2004, I purchased a digital SLR, the Canon 10D. I began to experiment with all the gadgets of my new toy. Not spending money on rolls of unused film and having the immediate knowledge of the quality of the shot were nice benefits to shooting digital. Though sometimes I missed the pause and reflection afforded by my trusty old Nikon.
2007–present
As I began to travel more, I realized the benefit of packing light and now carry a digital point-and-shoot. I wanted to try some unique angles (as the camera lens is somewhat limiting in its abilities) while still capturing the feel of the locations I visited.
